Why text cannot be checked yet
The mark is a statistical bias in token selection, seeded on a private key held by Anthropic.
Detection means running a specific likelihood test with that key and getting a score back. Without it there is nothing to compute — you are looking at ordinary words that happen to be arranged in a particular way.
Anthropic says it will support users and third parties in detecting its marks, and has not given a date for that tooling.
What every text checker is really doing
Tools advertising a Claude watermark check are running one of two things, and neither of them is the watermark:
- A scan for zero-width and invisible Unicode characters
- A generic AI-writing classifier that guesses from style
Why the second one is worse than useless
Style classifiers have well-documented false-positive problems, and they are already the tools causing people the most trouble.
A classifier saying 'likely AI' tells you nothing whatsoever about whether the Claude watermark is present. Conflating the two turns a guess about writing habits into an accusation about provenance.
The two are not even measuring the same category of thing. One reads style; the other would read a cryptographic signal.
What you can check today
If you have a .png, .jpg or .svg that came from Claude, the C2PA manifest is right there inside the file.
Read the metadata blocks and you either find a signed provenance record or you do not. That is a genuine check with a definite answer, and it takes about two seconds.
What to do while waiting
Assume anything a supported Claude model wrote after 2 August 2026 carries the mark, because there is no opt-out and no way to verify otherwise.
Plan on that basis rather than on a checker's output. Any tool telling you your text is 'clean' is telling you something it has no mechanism to know.
Checking someone else's writing
There is currently no way to determine whether text you did not produce carries a Claude mark. That is worth stating plainly, because the demand for it is obvious and the supply is entirely fictional.
If you are in a position where you feel you need to check — teaching, editing, hiring — the honest answer today is that the tools available to you are style classifiers, and their error rate falls hardest on non-native speakers.
