How To Check If Text Has A Claude Watermark

How to check if text has a Claude watermark has no tooling answer today, so the useful method is deduction from provenance.

You cannot read the signal. You can establish, with reasonable confidence, whether the conditions for it were met.

Work backwards from which model produced it, when, and how heavily it was edited since.

The four questions that decide it

Run these in order. Every one is answerable without any tool at all.

  • Was the text produced by a Claude model launched on or after 2 August 2026?
  • Did it come through Claude, the API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork or Claude Tag?
  • Has it been heavily edited, paraphrased or translated since?
  • Is the passage long enough for a statistical test to be reliable?

How to read the answers

Yes to the first two and no to the third means assume the mark is present and plan accordingly.

Substantial rewriting since generation moves it toward probably weakened, with no way to confirm how far.

Very short passages are unreliable to test regardless, which cuts in both directions — the mark may be there and undetectable, or absent and indistinguishable from present.

What the scanners will tell you instead

Paste text into any current checker and you get one of two things: a Unicode scan, or a style classifier score.

Neither is measuring the watermark. A clean result from either is not evidence of anything, and treating it as reassurance is precisely the mistake this page exists to prevent.

If the text is not yours

There is currently no way to determine whether someone else's writing carries a Claude mark. None, at any price.

Anyone claiming to have made that determination today has used a style classifier, which is a guess about writing habits rather than a provenance test — and one with a documented bias against non-native speakers.

Files are the exception

If you are holding the original .png, .jpg or .svg rather than pasted text, the C2PA manifest is directly readable and gives a definite answer in seconds.

Note that a missing manifest proves very little. Messaging apps, social platforms and screenshots all strip metadata routinely, so an unmarked file may simply have travelled.

Keep the evidence you actually control

If your concern is being able to demonstrate that you wrote something, the watermark is the wrong thing to focus on entirely.

Drafts, version history, timestamped documents and commit logs establish authorship far more convincingly than the absence of a mark ever could — and unlike detection tooling, they exist today.
