What Anthropic actually says
The documentation notes that the absence of a mark does not prove content was not generated by Claude, because the content may have been heavily edited, paraphrased or translated.
Read that from the other direction and it is a statement about what defeats the mark. The company is describing the limits of its own system, which is more useful than anything a third-party vendor claims.
The word doing the work is 'heavily'
Anthropic separately says the mark may persist through some editing.
So there is a threshold somewhere between a light polish and a full rewrite, and neither Anthropic nor anyone else has published where it sits. A synonym swap is not a paraphrase. Reconstructing the paragraph is.
Why depth is mechanically necessary
The signal is statistical and accumulates over many tokens. Detection reads the aggregate rather than any individual choice.
Changing a handful of words leaves most of the distribution in place. Changing sentence structure across an entire passage is what actually shifts it, which is why partial effort produces partial results.
A paraphrase model is not neutral
If you paraphrase with another watermarked model, you may simply be trading one mark for another.
That is not hypothetical. EU transparency obligations apply across providers, and other vendors are widely expected to follow. Check what your rewriting tool runs on before assuming its output is unmarked.
Quality is the hidden cost
Automated paraphrasing tends to flatten prose. It lengthens sentences, reaches for less precise vocabulary, and quietly drops qualifiers.
Whatever it produces, you are publishing it under your name. Budget the editing time, because the output of a paraphrase pass is a draft rather than a finished piece.

No public detector exists, so you cannot confirm the outcome by any means available today.
This makes paraphrasing a reasonable, well-sourced approach with an unmeasurable result — which is, honestly, the description of every method available.
