Can You Opt Out Of The Claude Watermark?
Can you opt out of Claude watermark marking? No. There is no toggle, no paid tier that removes it, and no enterprise exemption.
That is deliberate, and understanding why explains why it is unlikely to change.

Why there is no switch
The marking implements EU AI Act Article 50 transparency requirements, which place the obligation on the provider of the system rather than on its users.
A provider cannot discharge an obligation that users are able to disable. An opt-out would defeat the compliance purpose entirely, which is why one was never on the table.
What people expected instead
Several reasonable-sounding exemptions were floated when this was announced. None of them exist:
- An enterprise or business-tier exemption
- An API flag for developers
- A region setting for users outside the EU
- An exclusion for code output
- A per-conversation toggle
The global choice
Anthropic applied marking worldwide rather than only to EU users, which was not required by the regulation itself.
Running one marked pipeline is simpler than geofencing by request origin, and it avoids a two-tier system where provenance guarantees depend on where someone happened to be sitting.
The commercial cost of that decision
Marking is a competitive disadvantage in a market where some users specifically want undetectable output, and the reaction after the announcement demonstrated exactly that.
A vendor that marks loses those users to one that does not. That Anthropic did it anyway is the strongest evidence that regulation rather than preference is driving this.
What about older models?
Models that predate the rollout did not mark at generation time, and Anthropic describes bringing them into scope as in progress rather than as permanently exempt.
So an older model is a shrinking gap rather than an opt-out, and building a workflow on one means building on a deprecation schedule you do not control.
What you can control
Not whether output is marked, but what you generate and what you do with it afterwards.
Using Claude for research, structure, critique and fact-checking while writing the prose yourself keeps the published text unmarked. That is the only genuine opt-out available, and it is a workflow choice rather than a setting.
It is also the version that holds up under scrutiny. A workflow where you wrote every published sentence needs no explanation later, whatever detection tooling eventually ships.
