Does The Claude API Watermark Output?

Does the Claude API watermark output — yes, and this is the part of the rollout with real product consequences.

Marking covers the Claude Platform and cloud deployments, so text your application generates for your end users carries the mark too.

Yes. API output is marked, and it flows through into whatever you build on top.

Scope, precisely

Anthropic lists the Claude Platform (API) alongside its first-party products, and explicitly includes AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry deployments.

Routing through a cloud provider does not change the answer, and neither does self-serve versus enterprise contracting.

What this means downstream

If you ship a product on the API, marked text reaches places you may not have thought about:

  • Content your users generate and then publish
  • Summaries and rewrites of text your users supplied
  • Translations, where the source was human-written
  • Support replies, product copy and documentation
  • Anything cached and reused later

The compliance angle

Anthropic advises that customers deploying Claude should independently assess what Article 50 requires of them.

That is a pointed statement worth reading twice. As a deployer you may carry disclosure duties of your own, separate from and additional to Anthropic's obligation to mark the output.

The case worth thinking hardest about

A user pastes in their own writing, your product improves it, and the returned text is marked.

Your user may reasonably believe the result is entirely their own work, because substantially it is. Whether that needs surfacing in your interface is a product decision, and it is a much easier one to make now than after a complaint.

What you cannot offer

There is no API parameter to disable marking, no enterprise tier that removes it, and no region setting that avoids it.

If a customer asks for unmarked output, the honest answer is that it is not available from any supported model — and that the same obligation is expected to reach every major provider serving the EU.

Cached and stored output

Anything you generated and stored is already marked, and that includes cached responses, seeded databases and pre-generated copy sitting in your repository.

Marking happened at generation time, so there is nothing to backfill and no migration to run. It is worth knowing the extent of it before someone asks which parts of the product are affected.

Worth doing now

Decide where in your product AI involvement should be visible, and write that down before anyone asks.

A disclosure you designed deliberately reads very differently from one added after a user discovered something you had not mentioned.
