Remove Claude Watermark From DOCX
Remove Claude watermark from DOCX files and the same split applies as everywhere else: the container is easy, and the writing is not.
A .docx is a zip archive of XML parts, and the identifying information sits in parts you can open and edit directly.
Clear document properties and tracked changes. The prose still carries its own mark.

What the container gives away
Word documents carry far more identifying material than most people expect, and none of it is the watermark:
- Document properties: author, company, last modified by
- Revision history and tracked changes
- Comments, including resolved ones
- Total editing time and the template it originated from
- Embedded image metadata, which may include C2PA manifests
Clearing it
Word's own document inspector removes personal information, comments and revision data in a single pass, and it is the fastest route for most people.
Because the file is a zip archive, you can also rename it, unpack it and edit the XML parts directly if you want to see exactly what is in there rather than trusting a checkbox.
The prose is untouched by all of that
None of the above affects the text watermark. Clearing the author field does not change a single word of the document.
If Claude drafted the content, the statistical pattern lives in the sentences and moves with them into any format you export to — PDF, HTML, plain text or a paste into an email.
Order of operations
Rewrite first, in the editor, while the text is still easy to work with and you can see the structure.
Then finalise, then clear document properties as the very last step before sending. Doing it the other way round means re-clearing after every revision, and that is exactly the step people skip.
Watch the images
Images pasted into a document keep their own metadata inside the archive, and Word does not strip it for you.
If any of them came from Claude, they may carry a C2PA manifest that survives everything you did to the document itself. Clean the images before you place them.
Collaboration reintroduces everything
Sharing a document for review adds new authorship data, new comments and new revision history from everyone who touches it.
A document cleaned in March and edited by three people in April is no longer clean. Treat the inspector as part of the send checklist rather than a one-time task.
